A good used truck can save you lakhs. A bad one can cost more than a new one. Take this checklist with you, and if possible take a mechanic you trust.
Documents
- RC (registration certificate): the chassis and engine numbers must match the truck.
- Insurance, fitness certificate, permit and PUC: check validity dates.
- Loan status: if the truck was financed, ask for the lender's NOC and confirm hypothecation is removed from the RC.
- Challans: check for pending traffic fines against the registration number.
Body and chassis
- Look under the truck for cracks, welding or bends in the chassis frame — signs of overloading or an accident.
- Check the load body floor and side panels for rust and repairs.
- Inspect leaf springs and suspension for broken leaves or sagging.
Engine and drivetrain
- Start the engine cold. Heavy smoke, knocking or hard starting are warning signs.
- Look for oil leaks around the engine, gearbox and differential.
- Check the clutch — a high biting point usually means it is worn.
- Ask for service records; regular oil changes matter more than low kilometres.
Tyres and brakes
- Check tread depth and even wear on every tyre. Uneven wear can point to alignment or axle problems.
- Test the brakes and listen for air leaks on air-brake trucks.
Test drive
- Drive with some load if you can. Watch for pulling to one side, gear slipping, vibration and warning lamps.
- Check that all lights, horn, wipers and gauges work.
Never pay an advance before the documents are verified.
