FASTag has been mandatory for all four-wheelers and commercial vehicles in India since 15 February 2021. For truck operators running long routes, getting it right saves both money and time at toll plazas.
The key rules
- A vehicle entering a FASTag lane without a valid, working FASTag is charged double the toll amount.
- The FASTag must be linked to the correct vehicle and match its class. A tag issued for a smaller vehicle class can lead to wrong charges or penalties.
- Keep the tag funded and KYC-complete; blacklisted or low-balance tags are treated as having no tag.
Practical tips for fleets
- Use a fleet or corporate FASTag account so you can top up and track every truck from one place.
- Set low-balance alerts so trucks are never stuck at a plaza.
- Fix the tag on the windscreen properly — loose or damaged tags fail to read.
- Reconcile toll statements monthly against trip logs to catch wrong deductions and raise disputes quickly.
Selling a truck? Close or transfer its FASTag, otherwise toll charges may continue on your account.
